Alsace Ecomuseum in Ungersheim
Discover Alsatian culture!
Located 15 minutes by car from the Best Western Plus Au Cheval Blanc, the Alsace Ecomuseum in Ungersheim is a museum entirely dedicated to Alsatian culture.
Discover this extremely lively place where you can wander freely as a couple, with family or friends. Stroll through the small streets and take the opportunity to stop at craftsmen and traders such as blacksmiths, carpenters and barbers.
France's largest open-air museum of living history
The Alsace Ecomuseum in Ungersheim was conceived and organised as an early 20th century Alsatian village. It is composed of more than 70 buildings all originating from Alsace: houses, farms, chapels, schools... The ecomuseum offers you a good overview of Alsatian architecture!
The buildings are real Alsatian houses which have been moved to the ecomuseum in order to preserve them. You wonder how this is possible? The half-timbered houses are made of beams which are separated and numbered, so they can then be reassembled correctly.
Numerous activities and animations
During your visit to the village you will find active craftsmen, such as the potter or the blacksmith. In some houses, some small exhibitions are proposed on the Alsatian culture and the old trades or activities.
This is an opportunity for you to attend a course in an Alsatian school of the 1930s, to observe the blacksmith at work, to learn more about plants, flowers or beehives, to make bread, to feed farm animals, to listen to tales, to take part in a violin making workshop or to taste dishes with the flavours of yesteryear.
The Alsace Ecomuseum offers a very varied programme of exhibitions and activities which changes regularly!
