The castles of Alsace
A remarkable line of defence
About half an hour's drive from the hotel, you can find no less than seven different castles, all unique in their kind. At the time, they were defensive buildings, but today they serve a variety of purposes. Let's discover three of these buildings that have survived the centuries!
Visit the castles of Alsace
Bucheneck
Built before the 12th century, the Bucheneck castle is located 20 minutes by car from your Best Western Plus Au Cheval Blanc hotel.
Listed as a historical monument since 1984, the building has served as a residence for various noble families, but also for the bishop of Strasbourg. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the history of the town of Soultz-Haut-Rhin, from the reception of a garrison of the Order of Malta within its walls to the story of the life of the town's Jewish community.
The Nueuenbourg
Not to be confused with the castle of Nuenbourg in Germany, this building is only a 25-minute drive from your Best Western Plus Au Cheval Blanc hotel.
Built in the 14th century, the first castle did not survive the sinister Thirty Years' War. In the 17th century, however, Abbot Philippe de Loewenstein ordered the construction of a new castle, which is the one we can see today.
After many transformations, sometimes a workshop, sometimes a villa, the castle is now a cultural and tourist centre. Visit its gardens, which host temporary exhibitions and events!
Engelbourg, the Eye of the Witch
A very scary name for a castle, the Witch's Eye was not always so called. Located about 30 minutes by car from your Best Western Plus Au Cheval Blanc hotel, it was Louis XIV who ordered its destruction in 1673, after the treaties of Westphalia which attached Alsace to France.
A group of miners was sent in, but they ended up collapsing the tower of the keep, creating an atypical structure that can still be seen today, a circle of stone visible from afar. This is the Eye of the Witch.
The ruins, forgotten for a while, were rediscovered and classified as a historical monument in 1898. Since then, courageous volunteers have taken on the mission of restoring the building to its original state. An atypical place not to be missed!
